Abstract

Major causative factor of oral malodor is sepsis by oral microorganisms, and among major parts of sepsis one is dorsum of tongue, Therefore, it is needed that we should clean the teeth and tongue with toothbrush to improve the reducing effect of
oral
Malodor.
In order to evaluate the effect of tonguebrushing in reducing oral malodor, 21males and females aged twenties were selected as subjects that have never been dental caries and periodontal disease and have good dentition, and the author analyzed
the
volatile sulfur compounds n early morning mouth air of subjects that have never clean oral hygiene practice during 24 hours.
Mouth air was sampled before toothbrushing and then the subjects practiced toothbrushing and then tonguebrushing and were re-evaluated each following time immediately after, 5 minute after, 10 minute after toothbrushing and tonguebrushing in
mouth
air.
Gas chromatographic technique was employed for analysis of mouth air.
In the sequental order, percent change in volatile sulfur compounds of mouth air samples was calcuated in relation to it before toothbrushing.
@ES The obtained reslts were as follows:
@EN 1. Both hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan of mouth air has been significsntly reduced immediately after toothbrushing(P<0.05).
2. Both hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan of mouth air has been significantly reduced immediately after toothbrushing and tongueburshing(P<0.05).
3. Though hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan of mouth air has not been recognized as effective on oral malodor reduction 5 minute and 10 minute after toothbrushing(P>0.05), compared to before toothbrushing, methyl mercaptan of mouth air has
been
significantly reduced 5 minute and 10 minute after toothbrushing and tonguebrushing (P<0.05).
